Cindy and I will be attending the first antique market for us this summer; the Randolph Street Market Festival, formerly the Chicago Antique Market. If Cindy can get our new video camera operating right, we hope to have some video to share with you of our adventure at this urban market and festival, including a visit with Sally Schwartz, who owns the event.

If you’ve been following our blog, you might recall that Sally is a member of 31 Club, and last summer, she sold a valuable Pauline Palmer Painting that had been in her family, and its six digit figure sale changed her life. She was able to buy out her partner’s share of the Chicago Antique Market and make it her own. (Here’s the story Cindy wrote about it.) We sure hope that if you’re in Chicago this summer, you’ll pay a visit to this fine summer urban market.

This visit to the market will give Cindy and me a chance to reacquaint ourselves with the new dealers we met last summer, as well as a chance to visit with old friends.

I have been assured that there will be great paintings, pottery and glass, so you know I will be feeling as if I’m near heaven as I browse around inside and out for true treasures. Sally has wanted to create an atmosphere of a Paris Festival, and with her talent, I certain it will be just that.

Remember to take your time as you approach each booth at a market or flea market, and see if you can pick out the better pieces from a distance. As you practice, you will be able to eye the items that are of interest, and the other items will quickly pass from your eyesight. When I started attending Flea Markets, it was an all day job, but today I can usually complete a market in under four hours, regardless of its size.

When you do spot something of interest, be sure to inspect it for damage first, and then ask the dealer to tell you all he knows about the piece. Often, you will know as much as he does, but be sure to be attentive. If it happens to be something you want to buy, your attentiveness will start you out on his good side.

Before you start negotiating for anything, always identify yourself as a dealer. This usually assures you of at least a 25% discount, while the normal discount to the public is 10%. Other dealers know that you must be able to make a profit from the items you buy, so most of them will work with you. If for some reason you can’t come to an agreement on price, be sure to return later. If the item is still there, take another pass at it. If the pieces is over priced, most dealers will know that you are aware of this, and a 50% discount can be in the cards and may well be accepted.

The later in the day, or later into the event, the lower your price should be. The reason for this is that if you are the first to see a special piece, then the dealer could have it underpriced so a very little discount could be in order, but as the sale progresses more and more people will have looked at the piece, so at the asking price it probably isn’t a bargain, if they have passed on it.

I will be leaving for the Smokies next Thursday, so I hope that every member will use these next few days to prepare for the ten days I will be away. Yes, I will have my cell phone for you if that special items becomes available, and I’ll have a laptop to continue the Blogs, but I do hope to rest a little and have fun with the family.

Something interesting and humorous happened yesterday when I received an e-mail from one of my favorite people and one of our earliest members. She told me about an Estate Sale where a Rookwood Lamp and a Muncie Lamp were being offered. She thought they were priced a little high, so she asked what would be a good price to offer them the next day when the price would be reduced. I immediately sent her back an e-mail to call me because I thought we could have a good laugh together. She got right back to me, and I had to tell her that I had already purchased the two lamps the day before.

Here’s what happened: I got a call the day before from another lady who was interested in the sale, and she told me about these wonderful lamps. She was interested in purchasing these using the Associates Program. So, I called the person conducting the sale to see if we could buy them. I was told it wasn’t possible, but if I called the next day after 12:00 noon and they hadn’t been sold, I could have them. I called and they were available.

Naturally, I bargained a little before completing the sale. I’m sure the same thing could happen in the future where two people see the same sales ad and call me. Antiques & Fine Art – The New Market During the Financial Storm

Every day, there’s more bad news about plummeting stock prices, the spiking foreclosure rate, and about the high price of gas and food causing many financial hardships. However, this financial climate has created the perfect storm for those of us working in the antiques, collectibles and fine art markets, particularly those of us who are working the 31 Club Plan.

The 31 Club Plan is the plan I wrote about in my book, 31 Steps to Your Millions in Antiques & Collectibles, published just last year.

Those of us working this plan are looking to profit substantially by locating and purchasing rare and valuable antique treasures to re-sell to collectors and the world’s wealthy. We work this market because we’re looking to build our financial futures, but find the traditional ways, like the stock markets and company 401K’s, just don’t seem to be doing what we need them to do.

“I found a wonderful art glass vase at a house sale, but I left behind some pottery and a paperweight and now it’s weighing heavy on my mind.” 

Lou Ann, a 31 Club Member who often finds wonderful items at fantastic prices, said that to me last week. I can honestly say that after 40 years in the business, I still ask myself what I might have left behind at a sale. The voice in my head says to me, “That piece of pottery might have been better than you thought, and that painting could’ve turned out to be a real winner, Daryle. Why didn’t you buy it.” I even find myself churning these thoughts in my mind months after the sale. Although I try not to think about what I might’ve missed, I’m only human.

I don’t know if the pottery Lou Ann left behind was special, but at a low enough price, I would have taken the chance since I was already there. However, the real story might have been the paperweight.

Most people know very little about paperweights, so having the knowledge can give us a big leg up on finding that special one.

Paperweights only have had two great periods in their development, first from 1840 to 1860 and then starting in 1952 and continuing today.The most famous companies producing paperweights during their heyday in the first period were the St. Louis Company, Baccarat, Clichy, Bacchus and Whitefriars. Soon after this period, the art of making paperweights landed in America with companies such as The New England Glass Company, Gillinder, Mt. Washington and later Millville.

Try to get a look at some of these early pieces because they are just fantastic, produced with amazing quality. I could spend the next ten pages just describing them, but this would do you very little good, and I highly recommend you buy a few good books on paperweights. Second hand books are just fine. In fact, we’d sure appreciate it if you used our site if you order books from Amazon, because it helps us keep this site up and running. The second period of paperweights starting in 1952 with companies like Lundberg, Orient and Flume, Perthshire, Stankard, Ysart and a name I’m sure you’re already familiar with – Lotton. Lotton’s pieces are going up in value as we speak. Baccarat is producing weights that challenge the early the early ones for beauty. Each of these companies have made outstanding paperweights for the collectors.

Early pieces can bring over $100,000 and it isn’t unusual to find ones priced from $10,000 to $25,000. In fact, it is very hard to find a great example that doesn’t bring over $500. Like almost everything else, when the paperweight market got hot, the fakes and reproductions spilled out into the market place, but most of them are so bad, my nine-year-old can tell the difference.

How do we know what paperweights are worth, and how can they be identified?

Here’s a little secret. Most people pick up a paperweight and look on the bottom, finding nothing and put it back down. But, most paperweights are identified by marks within the weight itself. Baccarat has figures within the canes that even give you the date they were made. Often the maker’s initials are marked within the design of the weight, and you will have to look very carefully to find them. Take time to study every paperweight you see, because just one might put several thousand dollars in your pocket.

Get those books and study them. They will more likely only set you back a few dollars, but owning them could prove invaluable.

How to Vacation Free with Antiques, Collectibles & Paintings

I traveled to Baltimore yesterday so my wife, Vickie, could attend a business conference, and Joshua and I could visit with my other son, Lawson. In past years, I went out to look for treasures as she participated in the scheduled events and classes. This year started out different, however.

It was a task being ready for the early morning taxi. We allowed plenty of time to arrive early and get through security at O’Hare – that is, of course, if the taxi showed up. Six calls later to the taxi company, each time being told the driver is five minutes away was not the way to start the day. We finally called another company, but by this time it was 9:30. It was not likely we’d make our 10:30 flight. But, the second taxi company made good on their word, and as we were pulling out of the driveway, wouldn’t you know it — the other taxi appeared. We all smiled and waved goodbye to him as we burned rubber on the way out.

Rushing out of the taxi to check our bags, we were told the plane had already closed its doors, so we spent three hours hanging around the airport before we caught the next flight. Vickie missed the day’s sessions, but we did have a wonderful meal with my older son and his wife once we arrived. I do hope to treasure hunt tomorrow, but I am wondering what could happen next.

When you are visiting another part of the country on a trip, be sure to
look for items that are out of place there. For example, if you are on the East Coast, look for West Coast paintings. By doing this, your chances improve for finding a treasure. Remember, I found the painting by Kentucky artist Harvey Joiner on the East Coast. The market for this painting was in Kentucky. That’s when $240 turned into $3700. That isn’t so bad for a country boy.

On several past trips to Baltimore, I found items that fattened my
wallet quite well. I once purchased a painting from an antique store for $500 that was later sold for $2500. And the store shipped it to me in Chicago. I’ve also found pottery such as Rookwood and Roseville priced to my liking on these trips. I used to have a rule that no matter where I traveled, I could pay for the trip plus turn a fair profit for myself by selling the things I bought on the trip. As your knowledge increases, you should be able to do this, too.

Economic Downturn Revitalizing the Antique Market as People Sell off Family Treasures

Yesterday, Cindy sent me an America Online story link that came up as a featured AOL News story. “People Sell Belongings to Make Ends Meet,” was the AOL story in which Associated Press writer, Anne D’Innocenzio states, “Struggling with mounting debt and rising prices, faced with the toughest economic times since the early 1990s, Americans are selling prized possessions online and at flea markets at alarming rates.” I scratched my head and said, “Hmmmmm.” 

Later in the day, Kovels’ Komments Newsletter showed up in my mailbox. While the Kovels’ are not part of the mainstream press, they are a recognized authority in our industry, and in their newsletter, they acknowledged “The economic downturn has created new sources for antiques and collectibles.” I scratched my head and said, “Hmmmmm.”

Yesterday was April 30th. Didn’t I post a story back on April 18th about the economic downturn and its likely effect on the Antique & Collectible industry as well as its effect on family life? Yes, I did. It’s titled, “Inflationary Times Good for Antique Dealers, Collectors and Families,” and it’s been all over the Internet. Could it be I was ahead of the mainstream call?

Then, Cindy reminded me that we made economic commentary on our April 15th Blog when I stated (and I’m quoting myself here) “Timing is everything, and right now the time is right to be buying at bargain prices. At times like these, when people are stricken with fear, and the market fluctuates, we’ll be able to make our best purchases.” I also wrote in that same article, “It is likely that those who feel weary with our economy will likely sell their better items.” Hmmmmmm.

I’m flattered that others would follow our lead and be in agreement that these are going to be some hard times for people. Yet, at the same time, it will be the best of times for people in the Antiques & Collectibles Industry. The signs of it have already emerged, and Cindy is busy putting together a 31 Club Newsletter that will soon go out to our members about this very topic. If your 31 Club can continue to stay ahead of the pack, then we’ll able to fill our coffers before others get started, won’t we?

Inflationary Times Good for Antique Dealers, Collectors and Families

With news of inflation heading in an upward direction in energy and food, is anyone really at all surprised? My family has been feeling it for almost a year now. When the newscasters give us the latest figures, do they truly believe we need them to announce it to us? We all go to the grocery store and the gas station and can put two and two together. We know there’s inflation, but this period of time might be just what’s needed to revitalize our families, as well as the Antique and Collectible Markets.

When money is tight, families will likely spend more time together cleaning out their houses of unwanted junk, and be especially on the lookout for items that might be of value. We’ll probably see an increase in the number of garage sales and an increase in items coming up for sale at auction houses. Isn’t this just what we need? I believe this period of time will be like a child going into a candy store. There will be all sorts of candy for us to choose from, and the knowledgeable antique dealer will always spot the best. Our goal at the 31 Club is to make our members one of the best. For those of us who want to make money selling antiques, collectibles and fine art, the time couldn’t be better. The weather is improving, and soon the kids will be out of school. Be sure to include them in your treasure hunting plans because all the children that I’ve run across enjoy going to sales. Often my children have pointed me in the direction of some real treasures.

Aside from these upcoming hard times being good for those of us in the antiques industry, I believe it will be a good time for family. When a family’s gasoline bill out paces their mortgage payment, it makes sense people will be spending more time in their homes with family and friends rather than running all over the country looking for fun, dining and entertainment. We’re likely to go through a period of nesting, as the cost of going out for a simple hamburger will likely cost more than some are willing to spend. Eating at home may become a necessity rather than a chore. Driving around the block a couple of times just to clear our heads could cost you big on gas, so we just might have to head down to the basement and begin working at that workbench we forgot we owned in order to clear our heads. Maybe at that workbench, we’ll be able to construct a toy for our kids, or teach our children something about building.

Days of reading together, cooking together, enjoying family meals while discussing the day’s events, watching educational television and family shows together might just be a great remedy for what seems to ail us. We might even find that walking together after dinner and getting to know our neighbors could bring us amazing joy. Imagine that!

Rather than finding it necessary to continually looking for entertainment outside the home, the hike in prices can produce interest in family events and the sharing of common interests again and again. Like Collecting. Collecting is likely to become more popular, and from this interest, groups will be formed and deeper relationships forged.

Parents might even participate with their children, once again, in hobbies such as stamp and coin collecting. Some of my greatest joys are now coming from talking with my nine-year-old son about Show Globes, Foreign Coins, Webkinz and Nascar. This is a great way for us to spend a quality afternoon or weekend. Many people were writing off the Antique and Collectible business, concerned that there were no new collectors, and that the youngsters had no interest in anything that didn’t scream high tech. But, this tightening of the family budget may produce the next crop of antique and art collectors.

If this sounds like what goes on in the town of Mayberry, and Andy and Aunt Bea might be stopping over momentarily with a delicious out-of-the-oven apple pie to share with you,would that really be all so bad?

I truly believe that in addition to being good for the Antique and Collectible Business, the hard times ahead can be good for our families. By staying home and working together, money is saved and a real sense of joy and pleasure will return to our homes once more. No longer will we have to settle for the artificial pleasure that the world had convinced us we couldn’t live without.

These times seem to be returning, not by choice, but out of necessity. These changes in our lifestyle may leave us with withdrawal symptoms for a while, but in truth, it might be just what we need to get our sanity back. When we do, I’m guessing we’ll feel like we’ve found heaven on earth. When you get off a spinning merry-go-round, it’s often very difficult to keep your balance. But once we keep our feet planted firmly for awhile, it sure is going to feel great. What a great time this can be to reflect upon, and see through clear eyes, what a wonderful and magnificent world God created. And just maybe we’ll find some good antiques, too.

Antique Asian Porcelain – Rose Medallion from China

Many items were imported to the U.S. from China during the 19th and 20th centuries. Rose Medallion china was one of these imports. This very colorful china was a real hit in the U.S., and today, you might find pieces at almost every sale you attend. In fact, I’ve found many great pieces at garage sales and was able to pick them up very inexpensively.

Once you are familiar with these very distinctive Rose Medallion patterns, they can be spotted a mile away. Almost every piece of Rose Medallion will have from four or more panels that are decorated around a central medallion. This medallion is either a bird or peony, and the panels evolve from this medallion. The panels show birds and people in a background decorated with trees of peonies and leaves. The colors are what gives its origin away. They include greens, pinks, and many other colors that appear to be almost pastel.

The great thing about this china is most people lump it all together as almost worthless china. By now, you should know that this works to our advantage. Also adding to our advantage when searching for Rose Medallion, is that it’s usually unmarked. Because it wasn’t usually used for serving, the pieces can often be in mint condition and have very little wear on their bottoms. This is unusual for items that might be over one hundred years old. The variety of this china is limitless. You will find Baskets, Bowls, Candlesticks, Chargers, Garden Seats, Punch Bowls, Tureens and Vases. Always ask the seller if they’ll take less for this china because it is considered by most to be of little value. I have found it very easy to negotiate a price to my liking.

This is a subject where you’ll want to do a little research. You might start by going to eBay’s completed auctions, searching under “Rose Medallion Porcelain,” and then trying another word combination, like “rose medallion” or “rose medallion china.” I have found that you can come up with different items by the word combinations you use. I’ve suggested many times to search eBay, and the reasons why you might do this. First, to familiarize yourself with the different pieces and second, to see actual prices achieved at auction for the better pieces. Here’s sample from eBay: A Pair of Sauce Bowls $2500, Two Vases $1400, Wash Basin $1300, Platter $750 and a Bowl $700. Not bad for what most put little value on. Once you’ve searched eBay, do a search with a search engine, or even try searching by image.

I once went to visit a woman with many items to sell from her home, told me her father had spent many years in the Orient. I purchased almost everything she had for sale. It took every spare inch of my truck to haul away all the goodies. This is the same home where I purchased a large oriental urn, written about in my book, 31 Steps to Your Millions in Antiques and Collectibles.

I called a dealer friend of mine as soon as I returned home from her house, and he arrived to look at my treasures. He hardly keep his eyes off the large urn I purchased. He asked me for a price on the urn, and continued to ask me for a price on the urn. Finally out of frustration I said $2,500 and he said “Sold.” No one had to tell me that I just made a tremendous mistake, but it was too late. Yes, I only paid a few hundred dollars for it, but that isn’t a good excuse. I broke my own rule about not selling anything until I had researched it.

It was from this woman’s house that I also purchased some Rose Medallion. I probably spent $500 on pieces of this china. I was just guessing that it was old, but it did pay off for me. To the best of my recollection, those pieces brought me back over $7,500.

As you can see, I bought it all. If you ask that woman today if she was satisfied with the prices she received, the answer would be yes. That’s the way I like to do business.
